What are .zip files?

What are zip files? Zip files are archives containing other files inside of it. When you want to download a new program or a some email file attachment, more often than not you will find that the file is an archive of some sort. There are other types of archives that are also popular, such as .rar files. These files sometimes offer slightly better compression. Zip files can be password-protected, so even with a decompression tool you would not be able to retrieve the files without having the password. On this blog you can find free unzip software to install on your computer.

If you want to create zip files, you need unzip software as well. You can select a group of files and/or folders and add them to a new archive file, which creates a copy of those files inside a new zip file. You can then attach that zip file to an email or upload it to share on the internet.

Along with the benefit of combining multiple files into one, zip files can also shrink files tremendously (which helps when you want to email them). Plain text files (.txt, .csv) get very good compression with zip software and rar software.
